Angel Cabrera (Classics) became the first Argentine to win the green jacket at Augusta National on Sunday by surviving a wild final round followed by a three-man sudden death playoff with fellow FootJoy players Kenny Perry (SciFlex glove) and Chad Campbell (Classics, prototype glove). After closing with a final round 1-under 71, Cabrera drove into the trees on the first playoff hole, hit another shot off a Georgia pine, but still scrambled for par with an 8-foot putt. He won on the next playoff hole with a routine par on the 10th when Perry missed the green to the left and made bogey. Cabrera, who won the U.S. Open at Oakmont two years ago, won his second career major and the first green jacket for Argentina. It was 41 years ago when Roberto de Vicenzo made one of golf’s most famous gaffes, signing for the wrong score that denied him a spot in a Masters playoff. De Vicenzo gave Cabrera a picture of a green jacket two years ago when Cabrera returned home as U.S. Open champion and told him to go for it. On this turbulent day, it took everything Cabrera had. He closed with a 1-under 71 to get into the first three-man playoff at the Masters in 22 years. “This is a great moment, the dream of any golfer to win the Masters,” Cabrera said through an interpreter during the green jacket ceremony. “I’m so emotional I can barely talk.” As with most Masters tournaments, the final few holes were filled with near-misses and "what-could-have-been" moments. Campbell, who was steady throughout the day, finished with a 69 and was eliminated on the first playoff hole when he found a bunker from the middle of the 18th fairway, then watched his 6-foot par putt barely lip out of the hole. Perry did not make a birdie until his 20-foot putt on the 12th curled into the side of the cup. Campbell, playing in the group ahead, narrowly missed two eagle putts on the back nine to forge a brief share of the lead. Then it looked like Perry had the green jacket buttoned up when he hit his tee shot to within a foot of the cup on the par-3 16th hole for a two-shot lead over Campbell and Cabrera, who made an 18-foot birdie putt on the 16th just to stay in the game. However, Perry bogeyed his final two holes setting the stage for the playoff.

The wind blew a little more, the greens dried out a little more and scores have come down a little more. But none of that really mattered to Chad Campbell, who shot a second round 2-under 70 and enters the weekend as the co-leader at 9-under par. Thursday was an ideal day for scoring at the Masters -- sunny and warm, no wind, soft, receptive greens, tempting pin placements -- and the players took advantage. In fact, there were 20 rounds in the 60's which set a first round record and tied for most in any round. The traditions at Augusta are endless, but one of the most entertaining and unique is the tradition of players skipping shots across the pond at the par three 16th hole during practice rounds. Well, patrons got a treat this year when Vijay Singh stepped up, skipped his ball across the pond and knocked it right in the hole for an ace! I'm sure Vijay would prefer this take place on Thursday or Sunday, but a great moment for everyone that witnessed it.
